Dogs, Chicken buses and tortilla : Guatemala !

------------FRANCAIS--------------

It has been a while since I didn't spend some time here. It is more difficult to find a place with a decent connection and I also promote real social life than interactive. In short, from La Paz Mexico it has been many hours and several thousands of km on the road, air or water.
I started to fly (haled) to Mexico City. I found the hostel next to the huge and famous Zocalo where I spent 3 years ago my first night in Mexico. It has not changed except that plasma screens have replaced the posters for the different rounds. I spend 4 days in the capital that I enjoyed rediscovering with a kind of nostalgia. In summary it was a party, headache and wrestling game, the famous fight between masked Mexican guys.

I then took a bus to Puerto Escondido on the Pacific coast where I meet with Terhi, a Finnish friend of Ecatarina, accompanied by three other Mexican friends: Gladys, and Ricardo Santos. As soon as I arrive we all together one hour south ftom here to San Agustinillo just after eating grilled tuna that the group of friends had fished the same morning. San Agustinillo is a small village far from everything on the beach where time stands still as soon as you get in. Only mosquitoes remind you that you're not really in heaven but on the planet Earth.

After four days spent under the sun, water, in a hammock or eating, we decided to pull out of this spatiotemporal abyss before it is too late and we forget the feeling of any brain activity. The Mexicanos left the previous day. Terhi and I leave to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. The temperature drops as we are at 2100 m altitude. Change of scenery: San Cristobal is a Spanish colonial city and then very colorful. Life is good here, the city is neither too large nor too small and you can still breathe a rebellion air among the people who still seem to be members of Liberation group Zapatista.

Three days later we leave the mountain to bury nosu in hot and humid jungle of Palenque. The visit Mayan ruins takes us a few thousand years in the past and the waterfalls of Agua Azul us cool.

------------ENGLISH--------------

We spend three nights in the jungle, then we take the road towards Guatemala. We cross the border on a motorized canoe on the Rio Uumacinto. The river is a little bit wider than some few 10 meters but it is the boundary between two different worlds. My first impression on the border is that Guatemala is much poorer than its northern neighbor. Good bye the comfortable air-conditioned bus from Mexico.
We take the only one bus existing at this part of the border, which to my surprise eventually start (given the shape of the bus) and takes us to Flores on a dirt road for 4 hours. Meanwhile we get off the bus and a guy behind a counter watching a football game stamps our passports without paying attention to us at all.
Flores is a small town on a small island of 400x400 m surrounded by a lake very beautiful but where the simple fact of eating in the shade in front of a fan you are literally dripping with sweat.
Terhi has to go back to Mexico the next morning. I'll explore the ruins of Tikal in a jungle even higher and denser than Palenque while I am carefully observed by toucans and spider monkeys that seem to own the site.

The next day I take the road to Lanquin, a village further south and in the mountains. A hostel located in a valley along a refreshing river after a long journey. After having spent the night I go with a group of people from the hostel to Semuc Champey. Probably one of the most beautiful places on earth that I had the chance to see. It begins with a tour in caves carved by water, lit with candles and sometimes swimming or creeping in very narrow passages (trying to keep the candle lit). You descend a river on old tubes, you jump off a bridge, then reached the place most spectacular Semuc Champey. A series of natural pools and waterfalls. The site is not full of tourists because not so easy to achieve but incredibly beautiful.

I leaveLanquin the next day with the equivalent of $ 1 since it's not possible to withdraw money here. I'm on my way to Antigua next to Guatemala City. On the road I met Barry and Ryan Irish and American. We stay in the hostel Gato Negro for 2 nights. By the way weo climb the Pacaya volcano (2552 m) and grill marshmallow on the slow flow of molten lava.
Then direction San Pedro on the beautiful Lake Atitlan where we forget the world for five days. Destiny and luck make that we have a basic little house for us three for less than $ 4 per day.
To be continued soon...
